Who owns BMW? The automaker is owned by the BMW Group and has its headquarters in Munich, Germany. The BMW Group also owns other well-known brands, including Mini and Rolls-Royce. Many Normal drivers interested in owning a new BMW are also curious about the brand’s history. At BMW of Bloomington, we are happy to share details on the legacy of this brand with our Decatur neighbors.
The BMW Group, which in Germany is referred to as BMW AG, is an incorporated entity owned by shareholders. Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengeselleschaft is the full German name of the company. The first part of the name translates to “Bavarian Motor Works,” while the “AG” designation lets the public know that it is a shareholder company.

Now that you know who owns BMW, you may also be interested in knowing a little more about the origins of the brand. The company got its start out of Rapp-Motorenwerke GmbH, which was originally tasked with building aircraft engines back in 1913. The brand was renamed in 1917.
After a short hiatus, the BMW company name was brought back in 1922, and the company produced its first motorcycles in 1923. In 1933, the BMW 303 made its debut. It was the first new, self-developed car from BMW. Since then, the brand has built a stellar reputation for luxurious vehicles that deliver the ultimate in performance and sophistication.
